Throwing axe types

Throwing axes have been used as weapons many years ago, by soldiers and knights. Later, throwing axes has become a very popular sport, and you can notice many different axes at today competitions. So, what are the types of throwing axes?

Basically, we differentiate 3 types of throwing axes:

  • Francisca
It has an arch-spaed head that widens towards the edge and the top of the head has an S-shape.
  • Hurlbat
The definition about this is unclear, however, this is a type of a club that could be thrown.
  • Nzappa Zap
A unique axe design, with an iron head. The handle has a club shape, with the head attached to it using struts.

Estwing tomahawk vs Sog

There are so many quality throwing axes, but in most cases, the choice would be down to thee two manufacturers. So, should you buy an Estwing or a SOG model?

On one hand, Estwing creates forged steel construction and their models are very versatile. You can use it not only as a throwing axe, but also for chopping, splitting and kindling.

Estwing axes have a shock reduction grip and believe it or not, each axe comes with a lifetime warranty.

On the other hand, SOG models are small, very fast and have a very large cutting blade. The polished blade is good not only for throwing but for other activities like hammering.

SOG throwing axes are agile and lightweight, however, you need to be very careful with them as they have a limited lifetime warranty.

Best throwing axe for beginners

The best throwing axe for a beginner is really a personal preference. All of the models above could be used by a beginner. If you practice with the model you will get used to it and get better at throwing it. However, if I had to recommend one I would suggest the MTech USA MT-AXE8 or MTech USA XTREME MX-AXE10BK. Both these models are quiet cheap and have heavy duty handles so that if you miss and hit the handle then it will still be ok.
