Types of saws
There are many types of saws and in this section, you will learn the basics of each one. To make it easier, the saws are divided into two groups:
- Power saws
- Manual saws
For each type of saw, there will be a model recommendation.
Gas-powered, battery-powered, or electric? Check out the types of saws and the best models.
A circular saw is one of the power tools you must have – simple design and great cutting capacity. The electric motor powers to the blade which rotates at high speed which helps you to make the cut.
It is that easy – mount the specific blade based on the task and start cutting. Bevel and angle cuts, both can be achieved with this tool.
It doesn’t matter if you are a professional or a homeowner who needs help for tasks around his house, a circular saw is one of the types you definitively deserve to have.

With the miter saw, you can make cuts at different angles. The saw functions this way – the blade is mounted on a swing arm which pivots to one or both sides in order to make the cut.
If you are planning to build furniture, a miter saw should be considered as one of the tools you will need. You can use it for crown molding, picture and door framing and so on.
Once you have the miter saw, you will likely build a station for it. Depending on your tasks, you can choose between a huge one or a small one.
Otherwise, you can use this portable tool at the job site, as it can be a substitution for a table saw in some cases. It can make crosscuts, miters, bevels and compound cuts.
A miter saw can make all the cuts you need as a builder, which is why it is preferred by professionals. It is easy to use and it can produce cuts of the same length.
It is perfect for crosscuts, miter cuts, bevel cuts and compound cuts.
A lightweight model that you shouldn’t doubt its quality – if you ever owned a model from Makita, you already know what I am talking about.

The design of this type of saw is simple – blade attached on a flat surface. It is a stationary saw, that allows finishing your cuts much faster and efficiently.
Ever wondered what can you do with a table saw?
The main purpose of this power saw is to cut boards and blocks. Building furniture requires big pieces of flat wood, and those straight cuts can be done with a table saw.
However, the wood you are going to cut doesn’t need to be flat. For example, you can use your table saw to cut trunks into smaller pieces.
Additionally, you can make angle cuts, which can be a very useful feature in many cases. However, there is one issue that you need to be aware of – kickback.
You don’t want the block to fly back and kick you, which is why you need to be very careful. To make a crosscut without risk of kickback, it is recommended to use a crosscut sled.
Generally, there are four main types of table saws. Depending on your demands, you will have to choose one.
Table saw is ideal for cutting flat pieces of wood and trunks.
This portable model from DEWALT is a great combination of power, quality and reasonable price – great pick for hobbyist and DIYers.

This type of saw is created to satisfy the needs of woodworkers for making specific cuts. It has a very thin blade that moves up and down rapidly and allowing the operator to make long cuts.
It can make both straight, and curved cuts, and once you mount the right blade, cutting through different materials like hardwood and plastic won’t be a complex task.
Related: Jigsaw vs circular saw
But why is this type of saw so special?
Well, the difference here is the plunge cut, which cannot be achieved with any other saw. Make a hole using a drill, and then continue cutting with the jigsaw without cutting the material from the outside.
It is very lightweight and comfortable to use. However, it has one big disadvantage which you may want to consider – it is not very accurate compared to other saws.
The jigsaw is perfect for straight, curved and plunge cuts.
DEWALT is one of the most famous power tools manufacturers, providing quality tools for many years and this model is not a disappointment.
The battery of 20 V is enough to give you power for the toughest demands. You can handle many materials and you can only have hard times with steel.
It has little vibration and adjustable dust blower to keep the cutting line clear.
- 4-position orbital action
- adjustable dust blower
- variable speed
This type may be the most confusing of all, but once you take a closer look you will understand how it works and what is its function.
Although it is much similar to a jigsaw, it works differently. The blade moves forward and backward rapidly, allowing you to make the cut.
It is not a substitute for a jigsaw, but if you want to compare them you will notice that the reciprocating saw can cut through thick wood more efficiently.
The reciprocating saw is also known as a Sawzall and the idea behind this design is the old-fashioned saw that is pulled from both sides, even though the blade here is smaller.
There is not a blade guard, so make sure that the saw is not plugged into the power socket when touching it and always wear eye protection glasses.
It is used by construction workers and emergency services – each model varies in speed, power, and portability and with the right blade you can cut through wood, metal, drywall, etc.
The reciprocating saw is ideal for cutting wood and metals.
One of the best reciprocating saws on the market, designed by DEWALT who is promising maximum power for the toughest demands.
The DWE304 has a motor of 10 Amps for heavy-duty applications and variable speed trigger to match different tasks with the correct speed.

Radial arm saw
Imagine a circular saw, mounted on a horizontal arm – that is exactly what a radial arm saw is.
Many gurus will advise you not to buy this saw, as it is outdated and not really important. There is a bit truth in this, as it is probably the last thing you will want to add in your garage, but is it really useless?
Wouldn’t say so. This heavy and bulky saw can help you. it can make crosscuts, rip cuts, bevels and many other types of cuts.
The problem with this type of saw is that it is tough to set it up and it takes much time. Compare with the effort you will need to make in order to set up a miter saw, and you will understand why people may dislike this tool.
However, thanks to the number of different tasks it can make, it is still a good choice to buy this one which can be easily found on the market.
It is ideal for crosscuts, rip cuts, bevels, miters and many other cuts.
Not a famous manufacturer, but you will get a quality design with outstanding performance. This is a very durable model, that is easy to move and fits against a wall.

It is a compact and very useful device, although it is stationary. If you are new to woodworking, or you want to introduce your kid to woodworking, this is the safest saw available.
The blade is held from up and down, and you can make very precise narrow cuts with it.
What can you cut with it?
Basically, the scroll saw is made for cutting thin materials, mostly wood and plastic, but if you set up the right blade you can even cut metals.
The thin blade allows you to make smooth, curved cuts in tight places – the saw itself doesn’t need much space and most of the projects will only require a scroll saw.
Most of the models are pedal-operated, which means both of your hands are free. Thanks to this, the operation with it is easier and you will make accurate cuts.
It is ideal for delicate, curved cuts in tight places.
Scroll saws are not expensive, although you need to find the model that can offer the best value for the money. Without a doubt, the WEN 3920 is that model.
It has a unique design that accepts blades in two directions for infinite ripping capacity. With a variable speed, this scroll saw can make from 400 up to 1600 strokes per minute.

- variable speed
- cuts wood up to 2 inches thick

As you might have guessed it, a concrete saw is a power saw that is used for cutting concrete. However, you can cut not only concrete but also masonry, brick, and asphalt.
There are many versions of this tool, ranging from hand held up to walk behind saws. I am not quite sure about the first ones, but you have definitively seen the second type on the street.
Since those materials are difficult to cut, this tool uses diamond blades as it can deal better with stone and steel.
It is great for both dry and wet cutting, although you will need to consider the blade type and sharpness as dry cutting with a blunt blade can result in a broken blade.
It is ideal for concrete, masonry and brick cutting.
This Makita beast comes with a 14’’ diamond blade and it is a gas-powered machine that follows the toughest demands, with maximum convenience and performance.
It has a 5.1 HP engine with a no- load speed of 9350 RPM. It comes with a system for unused fuel recycle with up to 15% better consumption.

This type of saw, which you may know it as a cut-off saw is ideal for hard materials cutting. It is very powerful and makes cutting metals tiles or concrete an easy job.
Why is the saw called abrasive?
Well, because it uses an abrasive disc that spins at high speed. It is much different from all saw blades, as it doesn’t have teeth. The cutting wheel with the motor is mounted on a pivot arm that is attached to the base plate.
Depending on the task, the abrasive disc can be replaced with a superabrasive one, that last longer, which is the main reason why this type is commonly used.
Abrasive saws come in many variations ranging from tabletop up to walk-behind models.
It is perfect for cutting hard materials like metals, concrete, and tiles.
This DEWALT model with 15 Amps motor provides overload protection, great durability, and extraordinary performance.

This type of saw stands for a machine that is used to cut sheets into smaller pieces. They come in two variations vertical and horizontal, although you are more likely to find a vertical one as it requires less space.
Why is horizontal panel saw so different?
Horizontal panel saws are larger and have a sliding part which is used to push the material on the blade.
Cabinet shops often use this type of saw since it is much easier to cut panels, profiles, laminates in pieces. So, you can cut wood, but also metals and plastic.
Whether you choose a high-end or low-end machine, both have one blade and a scoring for creating a groove on the material before the blade cuts it.
It is ideal for cutting sheet goods into smaller components.
SSCC4 – CRL
This panel saw is made in a way to satisfy the needs of a small workshop or a typical contractor, offering accurate and heavy-duty cuts.

An oscillating saw is a tool you definitively need to consider – it works with a side to side movement very slight, yet rapid. To best understand this type saw, it uses vibrations allowing you to make cuts.
If you need to shave a cabinet or make other precise and smooth cuts, the oscillating saw is what you will need. Follow the straightedge and you will make the desired cut in a matter of minutes.
Depending on the task, you will need to choose the right blade type. For example, if you want to make plunge cuts, your pick should be a straight blade. Otherwise, a round blade is ideal for long cuts.
In case you are installing a new floor, you should take the oscillating saw with you as it will help you in cutting the doorjambs.

Those hungry teeth are getting the power from very powerful engines that allow you to finish the cutting quickly. You can choose between gas-powered, battery-powered or electric chainsaws.
What can you do with a chainsaw?
Although it depends on the model, chainsaws are great at felling trees, bucking, pruning, etc. There are even chainsaws that can cut concrete and ice.

You may haven’t heard about this type of saw, although it has proven to be very useful for indoor activities. It is known as a spiral cut saw and it is a tool that should get a place in your garage.
The rotary saw spins the cutting part around an axis, that results with pattern cut in wood, metals or drywall. Fortunately, you don’t need a starting hole for this type of task, as the spinning actually does the cutting.
Just turn on the saw, and get to the drywall – it is that simple. Plus, for a different type of tasks, you can add different bits, making the range of activities of this tool much wider.
It is ideal for cutting patterns and lines.
Searching for the right tool won’t last for weeks and months if you take a look at what DEWALT can offer – a durable rotary saw for rugged tasks.

Power pole saw
A pole saw is basically a curved blade mounted on a long handle. If you don’t like the manual version of this tool, you can choose a gas-powered, battery-powered or electric one.
If you have a garden, you know the struggle of trees trimming without a pole saw. You will need to climb a ladder or call a professional to get the job done for you.
With the power pole saw, trees pruning can be done very quickly, depending on the size of your garden of course. Whether you choose gas, battery or electricity as your power source, you will get enough power to get the job done without getting tired.

A handsaw is a tool you make an image of when you think of a saw. Or, at least what you used to think of when you were a kid.
Basically, it is a long saw that has a huge blade and a wooden handle attached on the end on it. the operating with it is simple – just draw a line where you want to cut and start cutting.
The big blade is not suitable for delicate cuts, but it can deal with typical sawing jobs.
What can you cut?
Handsaws are designed for cutting wood – hardwood and softwood. Additionally, you can cut plastic and some metals.
You can’t remove the blade from the handle and blades can have different teeth depending on the type of cut you will perform – ripcut or crosscut.
The handle won’t slip if you cut too quick and it is in a shape called pistol grip which allows faster cutting.
It is ideal for sawing jobs in your yard.
If you need a handsaw, and you still don’t know which model should you buy, then this could be your solution.
With the SharpTooth technology, you can cut up to 50% faster compared to other handsaws. It has induction-hardened teeth that stay sharp 5 times longer than the teeth on the conventional models.
It is thick and comfortable grip with no risk of slipping.
- SharpTooth technology
- induction-hardened teeth
- thick handle
This one consists of a very thin blade with a metal frame. It has small teeth that are made in a way to cut the material little by little, which can be a long process.
It has a design that dates many decades and maybe centuries ago but has proven to be very effective, especially when cutting thin materials.
Can I cut thicker materials?
Well, even though some of your attempts may succeed, that is not something I would recommend. The blade can break or damage and you don’t want that to happen.
However, even with regular use, the blade will become dull and you will need to replace it. This is not a complex process, as each blade has holes on both sides that allow you to attach the blade on the frame.
This type of saw cuts the material only when you push it forward, so when replacing a blade remember to put it in a way that the teeth are pointing away from you.
It has a pistol grip handle, which provides comfort and security that your blade won’t fell off.
It is ideal for cutting thin materials.

A very simple design, yet very efficient type of saw. A thin blade is put in between a frame with a U- shape and the frame is attached to a handle. The handle is straight and depending on the model, you can tighten or loosen the blade with it.
As many of you may know, this type of saw is used for delicate cuts and you can’t cut thicker material.
It is not made for aggressive cutting, as it is a small saw with a thin blade and you won’t have resulted in that way. It is best for edges shaping in wooden molding or making joints.
With the coping saw, you can make something that is closest to a plunge cut – drill a hole in the material, put the blade in and attach it on the other side of the frame.
What materials can you cut?
You can cut wood and plastic, although with the right blade you can succeed in cutting ceramic and some metals.
It is ideal for cutting joints and shaping edges.
Even if you are a newbie to woodworking, you should already have an idea of the importance of this tool. You may have never heard of BAHCO, but I am pretty sure you will remember this company once this coping saw gets to your hand.
This model has a nickel-plated steel frame, with a nice looking wooden handle. The blade is made of hardened carbon steel and it is interchangeable.
This saw is 6.5 inches and the blade has 14 teeth per inch, which is more than enough to handle every task.
- nickel plated steel frame
- wooden handle

A ripsaw is a saw made for manual cutting wood in the grain direction. The saw consists of a blade and a handle that can be made out of plastic or wood.
How to use a ripsaw?
Once you find the grain direction, draw a line on the wood in that direction. Make sure that the wood doesn’t move, and fasten it or hold it if it is needed.
Use short and fast strokes for better efficiency, and make sure that your blade is sharp enough for the task. Sharpening the blade is not a simple process, so you may want to be done by professionals.
The teeth on the blade are not bevel, but they bend left and right in a specifically designed pattern. Each tooth chips away small pieces with the cut.
It is perfect for cutting wood in the grain direction.
Looking for a saw that can make ripcuts? If you prefer manual tools, then this model should satisfy your needs.
This ripsaw from Crown Hand Tools made from nickel chrome alloy steel and the handle is secured with screws, which means there is no chance of the blade felling off.
The teeth are very sharp and can be sharpened as they will become dull after a while. There are 4.5 teeth per inch.
- nickel chrome alloy steel
- handle secured with screws
- 4.5 teeth per inch

This type of saw may be one of the top unusual things you have ever seen, but the reality is that is very useful and practical.
It has a short curved blade that is placed on the wooden handle. The blade needs to be curved because of the types of the cuts you need to perform.
The design on the veneer saw may vary depending on the manufacturer, however, you can change the blade on most models.
What can you use it for?
The term itself refers to the use – veneer saw for cutting veneer sheets into thin slices. It can cut both softwood and hardwood, and it is especially important for doors and cabinets as it gives a better look.
It can’t be used for other purposes because of the size of the saw and its blade – if you attempt to cut thicker material the blade will become blunt in a matter of minutes.
It is ideal for cutting thin slices of wood.
Two Cherries 520-2200 Veneer Cutter
A veneer saw is useful to have as you can’t make these type of cuts with another saw. This model cuts a perfect edge for joining veneer and it is designed to cut on the pull stroke.
The blade is curved, which means only one thing – you can start the cut in the middle of the material and finish the cut with ease.
You can cut single sheet for fine work, or several sheets at once to get a rough cut. With the 18 teeth per inch, you make smooth 90-degree cut on veneer.
- curved blade
- 18 teeth per inch
- 90-degree cut on veneer
See the Two Cherries 520-2200 Veneer Cutter here.
At first sight, fret saw is very similar to a coping saw. And apart from the frame, it isn’t very different actually.
The fret saw has a longer frame leaving more space between the frame and the blade. The blade is short and this type of saw is not designed for aggressive cutting as in that way you will only damage the blade.
To be more specific, fret saws cut when pulled, so when changing the blade keep in mind that the teeth should be facing towards you.

A keyhole saw, also known as a compass saw, is a type of saw that has a small pointed blade and depending on the model, it can have plastic or wooden handle.
What do you use it for?
The purpose of this type of saw is cutting holes through woods or walls. For example, if you need to install an electric switch, a keyhole saw will help you to make a hole.
Depending on the task, you can switch the blade in order to make the cutting more efficient. Before you start, check the saw and make sure that the blade is sharp and attached to the handle.
Next, use a drill to start the hole, insert the blade of the keyhole saw and start cutting.
If it is easier, you can mark the hole you are about to cut, and carefully follow that line. You shouldn’t go too deep as you don’t want to hit the opposite wall.

It is also known as nokogiri, and it works much differently than the majority of the European saws. This saw has proven to be very efficient and the huge amount of Japanese saws outside of the country of origin is the result of that.
What is so special about this one?
The blade is made in a way that cuts only on the pull stroke, unlike many other saws that cut on the push stroke.
This means that the cutting is much different – you don’t start with the tip of the blade, but with the back of it. The reason for this is that if you start with the tip you will have nothing to pull back.
The blade is very thin which makes it great for woodworking and carpentry as it allows creating a width of cut. You can replace it, even though with enough care you can use a single blade for a couple of years.
Japanese saws come in 3 versions:
Dozuki is best for joinery, Ryoba’s specialty is breaking down different materials, while Kataba is best for deep cutting.
